The numerous battery technologies (Plante, Tubular, Flat plate, High Antimony (Sb), Low Antimony (Sb), Vartabloc, Semi-Sealed Lead Acid, VRLA (AGM and GEL), Lead Calcium, Nickel Cadmium pocket plate, Sealed Nickel Cadmium and Fiber Plate Nickel Cadmium available today are less tolerant of incorrect charger settings and operator abuse than in the past. These reflect in shorter service life and higher maintenance requirements with degrading of system reliability.

The SILICON BMS™ is a control and monitoring system for Industrial battery chargers to ensure the correct battery manufacturer’s settings are applied to the battery charger. The SILICON BMS™ will alarm when any condition is abnormal or out of the battery manufacturer’s specification. The SILICON BMS™ improves DC system reliability and optimizes battery service life while reducing maintenance to a minimum. The SILICON BMS™ is fully automatic and is ideal for remote or difficult to maintain battery sites or where battery expertise is limited.

What is the difference between a Battery Monitoring System (BMS) and an Alarm card?
Battery Monitoring Systems (BMS) has the built-in intelligence to monitor and make multiple decisions, that has been set into the microprocessor to inform the user there is going to be a problem as there is a possible future problem arising on the system.

The SILICON BMS™ Elite setpoints are programmed into the system and if one parameter is changed (such as removing one cell/block), the setting can be changed by making the changes on the SILICON BMS™ Elite keypad. No other changes are necessary. Changes to settings on SILICON BMS™ Elite is easy and does not require a plant shutdown. If an incorrect value is typed in, the SILICON BMS™ will reject it and insert the closest correct value instead.

The SILICON BMS™ Elite monitors and controls the output voltage monitoring the input ac Mains voltage. If the mains voltage drops below a defined setpoint voltage, the SILICON BMS™ Elite will shut the control card down to prevent the control devices from possible damage. In turn, there will be a Minor alarm that there is no Mains ac voltage and will monitor output DC voltage and will cause a Major alarm when the DC voltage reached 1.8V/cell for Lead Acid and 1V/cell for Nickel Cadmium. The Minor Alarm is initialled that there is an alarm present but is not urgent.
The Major Alarm is initialled with the Minor Alarm that there is an alarm present but is urgent and needs serious attention.
