Silicon Engineering have developed a micro-processor based intelligent battery management system that has a full suite of alarms and only supplies the charge needed by the battery cells so as to avoid over/undercharging of batteries and unnecessary gassing, thereby reducing maintenance. Alarms are local and remote, visual and audio and can be connected to your Ethernet system / SMS module. The BMS Studio app allows for remote or on-site interpretation of the charger, events that have happened and any alarms present…
The numerous battery technologies (Plante, Tubular, Flat plate, High Antimony (Sb), Low Antimony (Sb), Vartabloc, Semi-Sealed Lead Acid, VRLA (AGM and GEL), Lead Calcium, Nickel Cadmium pocket plate, Sealed Nickel Cadmium and Fiber Plate Nickel Cadmium available today are less tolerant of incorrect charger settings and operator abuse than in the past. These reflect in shorter service life and higher maintenance requirements with degrading of system reliability.
The SILICON BMS™ is a control and monitoring system for Industrial battery chargers to ensure the correct battery manufacturer’s settings are applied to the battery charger. The SILICON BMS™ will alarm when any condition is abnormal or out of the battery manufacturer’s specification. The SILICON BMS™ improves DC system reliability and optimizes battery service life while reducing maintenance to a minimum. The SILICON BMS™ is fully automatic and is ideal for remote or difficult to maintain battery sites or where battery expertise is limited.
No operator intervention is needed to charge the battery. Switch the unit on, SILICON BMS™ will do the rest.
Built-in manufacturer-approved settings of most stationary battery technologies.
Complies with most of the Industry technical specifications for tenders.
Status of the complete system displayed on LCD. DC & AC voltages, currents, timers and alarms.
Reconfigure a battery change in less than 60 seconds – and know all settings are correct.
Charging protocol set for each battery type – auto-boost (Y/N), alarm values, timers etc.
Adjustment menu is password protected – no unauthorized tampering of settings.
Password may be customer changed.
Event Recorder stores over 800 events on a FIFO basis. You can now check the results of the battery test over the past months. Up to 100 different types of events may be logged.
Events, load and battery voltages and currents are now viewed remotely via SILICON ENGINEERING’s in-house custom-designed SCADA package called BMS STUDIO.
Real-time clock provides dd/mm/yyyy format for events timestamp
The temperature of ambient temperature.
Plug-in universal module for all units’ 5Amps to 1000Amps, 24VDC to 220VDC.
One SILICON BMS™ can handle one-battery and single or dual chargers.
µ-Sense (Micro Sense) ensures uninterrupted charging of batteries should SILICON BMS™ control fail.
Hardware equipped for remote communication and SCADA using MODBUS RTU.
Suitable for driving most single & three-phase analogue SCR control cards and upgrades.
LCD display backlit for easy reading in poor light. (Auto turn off after 10 min.)
Mature software (thousands in service since 1989). Older units are software upgradeable.
All charging procedures in accordance with DIN41772 and DIN41773 float charge voltage at 2.23V/cell ± 1% at 20°C for Lead Acid cells and at 1.4V/cell ± 1% at 20°C for vented Nickel Cadmium cells.
Every alarm you could wish for is already included as standard. (Up to 23 alarms)
Alarms displayed locally on LCD, remote isolated C/O relays, audio beeper and RS232.
Intelligent alarm analysis. SILICON BMS™ decides whether MAJOR (come immediately and rectify) or MINOR (can be rectified some time)
Alarms digitally set for alarm value and reset value. (e.g. Mains fail set=180 Reset=198V)
SILICON BMS™ logic stops load test during mains failure or after test circuit failure to save the battery charged state.
Earth Fault Alarm (EFA) indicates polarity and value of leakage impedance to earth in Kilo-ohms.
Boost timer override & load test fail alarms are latched until manual reset.
Alarm settings may be customer adjusted (with password access).
Alarm relays adjustable operating time delay (default 30 seconds).
Local LED indication for non-skilled staff warning.

Self-Test & Protection.
Self-test on power-up.
Integrated watchdog timer to prevent system latch-up.
Battery automatic periodic load test by turning off the charger & applying a dummy load.
Load test circuit components are self-tested. Any internal fault is alarmed.
Intelligent application of extra load in sites with high standing loads.
Automatic return to FLOAT from BOOST in the shortest possible time – extend battery life.
Manual LED lamp test.
What is the difference between a Battery Monitoring System (BMS) and an Alarm card?
Battery Monitoring Systems (BMS) has the built-in intelligence to monitor and make multiple decisions, that has been set into the microprocessor to inform the user there is going to be a problem as there is a possible future problem arising on the system.
The SILICON BMS™ Elite setpoints are programmed into the system and if one parameter is changed (such as removing one cell/block), the setting can be changed by making the changes on the SILICON BMS™ Elite keypad. No other changes are necessary. Changes to settings on SILICON BMS™ Elite is easy and does not require a plant shutdown. If an incorrect value is typed in, the SILICON BMS™ will reject it and insert the closest correct value instead.
The SILICON BMS™ Elite monitors and controls the output voltage monitoring the input ac Mains voltage. If the mains voltage drops below a defined setpoint voltage, the SILICON BMS™ Elite will shut the control card down to prevent the control devices from possible damage. In turn, there will be a Minor alarm that there is no Mains ac voltage and will monitor output DC voltage and will cause a Major alarm when the DC voltage reached 1.8V/cell for Lead Acid and 1V/cell for Nickel Cadmium. The Minor Alarm is initialled that there is an alarm present but is not urgent.
The Major Alarm is initialled with the Minor Alarm that there is an alarm present but is urgent and needs serious attention.
